I understand that, whilst one of the remaining major tyrannies...

… is slaughtering civilians, the other is trying to look human.

FREE TIBET! AND DAMN ALL COMMUNISTS!

I cannot say it’s working.  I have now seen the Opening Ceremonies.  Apparently they were managed by the great Chinese impresario, Le Ni Riefenstahl.

Tyrants. All much of a muchness.

Thank God there is real international sport, played in the proper spirit.  Thank God, in short, for Test cricket; and God forbid it should ever be made a part of the foulness that is the Olympics.

Talented chap, that Le Ni. And this year the Nouba are competing!

So are various contestants from the Indian ocean. Though not marine life, the Madagascans are thrilled. Leni would be so proud.

From the country that threw together a national anthem for the (modern) "Olympics"

"I understand that, whilst one of the remaining major tyrannies is slaughtering civilians, the other is trying to look human..."

Hey!!! Is that another thinly veiled anti-American crack? Because we're totally over trying to look human.

Cheek.

You forget that I am more pro-American than are all too many Americans.

It is the first time that I cannot even bring myself to look at the telecast. At least the USSR did not pretend the Olympics were Making Things Better.

GetUp, an allegedly grassroots Australian political movement, purchased advertising time on both sides of the opening ceremony on the station that would be screening it, to show a pro-Tibet advert. The station accidentally showed the wrong ad in the slot before the ceremony, and had 'technical difficulties that prevented them showing the one after'. But there was no IOC interference, of course.

Of COURSE not.

Why, they'd never THINK of such a thing.

Re: Of COURSE not.

Do it, yes; think, never.

Olympics

I did not watch the opening ceremonies.
Or anything so far this time.

My aunt went on and on the other day about how wonderful the Americans were going to be looking with "ascots" for the ladies and ties for the men.
I remain unconvinced that ascots and ties are enough to rehabilitate the Untied States.

spike an american not minding the truth

Whilst I, having a very good grasp of the truth...

... do not consider that the United States require any rehabilitation - EXCEPT as to their team habiliments. America wants better tailors, very badly.

Re: Whilst I, having a very good grasp of the truth...

Considering the horrors I saw on the English lady archers, I would say that this particular charity had very much better begin at home.

Leni came to mind for me too. I am still sickened by this whole thing.

Well.

At least you're not lumbered with the damned things in 2012.

Re: Well.

Oh, you're forgetting, Vancouver has the god-forsaken Winter Olympics in 2010.

Re: Well.

That reminded me of the rather fine opening ceremony for the Turin Games a couple of years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNSz0_XJD4s&feature=related This performance of our national anthem was its climax, and certainly better than anything the Chinese came up with.

There is a difference: Olympia was a work of genius - as are practically all her movies - and, if you are into movies, an absolutely unmissable experience. This one, I thought, was just big. There is a difference.

I´m ashamed my fellow Spaniards are competing. As for my fellow Hungarians, what can you expect of a folk practically overrun with Chinese sweatshops in every Budapest backyard? Pfui!
