Dire and dreadful news.
The admirable Michael Crichton has died.  I believe it was Thos Mann who said, 'Had the writers of Germany portrayed a better future than did Hitler, it should have been rather Hitler than the writers who were forced to flee Germany'?  Mr Crichton was amongst those who, in words Jack Lewis used of The Auld Mon George MacDonald, 'baptised the imagination'; his loss diminishes us all profoundly, because it is commonly through the medium of imaginative literature and of drama that opinions and philosophy are moulded, and his was a voice resisting those opinions and philosophies that now too widely prevail and bring naught save ruin to their holders.

Of all the brilliant stuff he wrote, my favorite is the way-underrated Westworld. The scariest thing about a lot of his work is that there is no resolution, only an ending, as it would be in real life.

I wonder if he had any input into the upcoming series finale of ER?

I was thrilled by the statistical aspects of Jurassic Park. They made it seem much more believable. Sadly, the film suppressed all the bits that might involve deep thought.

An appropriate accompaniment to the triumph of hopeandchangeism. This world was no longer suitable for so honest a man.
