On the moral responsibility of community owners.

As a sound Tory, I am tempted to suggest that the first duty is not to act like the world’s most famous community organiser. But let that pass.

I speak here from some experience (as well as with some asperity), being a community owner myself.

There are communities and communities, of course. Some of them exist only as a separate, dedicated place to post one’s fic or whatnot, and the owner is the only authorised poster. But of course, what we are here discussing are communities in which there is one maintainer and many participants who post.

The owner and maintainer of a community of which that person is not the ‘onlie begetter’ is, in effect, morally a trustee for the participation of the other members and the work and comments, essays, and so on that they post.

To delete a community that is stuffing with the work and contributions of others, without notice, consultation, or the possibility of recovery of their work by the others who created it, is, morally, theft. There is neither expiation nor excuse for this sort of behaviour, whatever is claimed to be the reason for it.

One may draw all sorts of nice Venn diagrams to explain this sort of thing, or to attempt to palliate it. None of them is worth a damn. This contemptible, utterly shitty sort of action, the indulgence in which certifies the actor as contemptible and an utter shit, violates all of the accepted norms of fandom, and indeed of common or garden decent human conduct. The sort of creature who indulges this behaviour wants to be hounded from fandom – for starters. (For mains, well, as to an appropriate fate …. You Might Very Well Think That, I Couldn’t Possibly Comment.)

And now to a rage-delayed bed. Oh – one final thing. I see that the irresponsible person responsible for this, has posted, in response to universal condemnation, a heartily American, Cee-Lo-style ‘Fuck You’ to fandom.

As my icon suggests, I refer her to the reply in Arkell vs Pressdram.

I think that's being rather unkind to St Paul...

Seriously, though, while I don't know what you're referring to, deleting a community and with it the work of others is an appalling thing to do. I'm not surprised you're furious. The thought is quite generally rage-inducing.

There's cheeky, and there's captious.

As to the meat of the matter, Quite.

Quite.

Well said, my dear. Some people have no manners...

Shocking, what?

Ghastly, really.

Very appropriate, though

Well, I like it! Maybe you could try it in purple or something *ponders*

Purple is nicer...

Mine end by being anatomical.

As does the user in question.

Is there any way this can be deleted before 30 days have elapsed?

She's in a hostage-taking mood, it appears.

Shocking bad form.

Or exhausted from discussing Ugandan affairs.

No excuse in any event.

I feel like this is exactly the kind of attention that was being sought... making sure all the "friendly members" post entire journal entries about them. Being controversial isn't a new way of trying to remain relevant. I feel like LJ is some bizarro Skinner box for this person and the upset is a kind of reward that will ensure continued theatrics. And I totally get why people are upset; I've had it happen to me (as I've said elsewhere). I just worry that what we think is public shaming is really being interpreted as some sort of twisted reward. Alas.
taradiane From: taradiane Date: March 14th, 2011 03:09 am (UTC) (Link)
Then she should have thought twice before comment locking the 'fuck you' entry after she got a handful of comments calling her on her shit. She didn't like that, so she does what she always does - deletes comments or locks them so no one else can respond. It's her modus operandi, if you will. So people starting taking their responses elsewhere.

blueboyfey From: blueboyfey Date: March 14th, 2011 03:16 am (UTC) (Link)
I agree. It confirms my point that I think she really likes this. It's very attention seeking. Why else pull these sort of really unethical stunts? It's unethical in the broad sense (theft of work) and it's immoral in within the HD fandom universe that's built on trust and respect. And it's incredibly narcissistic.
noeon From: noeon Date: March 14th, 2011 03:28 am (UTC) (Link)
I absolutely agree about the attention seeking. I think striking the balance between this sort of behaviour being NOT OK (which has to be done publicly) and then also being as forgetful as possible about the actual, oh wait, lost it. Was there someone? I've forgotten.

*grins*
blueboyfey From: blueboyfey Date: March 14th, 2011 03:29 am (UTC) (Link)
Exactly. :D

Oh look... something shiny..... *blinks at pretty baubles*
wemyss From: wemyss Date: March 14th, 2011 02:18 pm (UTC) (Link)

Well....

There are people who like to be beaten.

There are people who believe it their glory to die attacking HM Forces - which, so long as HM Forces are unscathed, I should encourage, until the buggers are killed to the last man.

One cannot, for fear that the idiot will be pleased, refrain from condemning, even so.

Re: Well....

True, and I agree. It's just frustrating.

Very.
noeon From: noeon Date: March 14th, 2011 03:27 am (UTC) (Link)
Thank you, dear one, for giving us all a chance to vennt about the lack of niceties.

I'm rather shocked that one *can* delete comms in this way. I always thought it was harder to do than all that. *boggles*

Yes, the mechanics are troubling.

And I don't mean the garagemen who keep the Bristol on the road.

As ever.
kestrelsparhawk From: kestrelsparhawk Date: March 14th, 2011 04:08 am (UTC) (Link)
I think it says it all when dear Wemyss is reduced to swearing.

And Obama definitely is famous, but I do not believe him to have ever been a community organizer. I say that as a former neighborhood organizer in a (competing) national network of organizing, so I suppose that's worth a grain -- or a box -- of salt.

OTOH, while I have seen mentions of this several places on f-list, I am ignorant of the communities involved and the owner thereof, and would appreciate this information.
wemyss From: wemyss Date: March 14th, 2011 02:15 pm (UTC) (Link)

You'd be astounded by my restraint, actually.

Dyson and Vaysh both explain the thing far better than I might do.

Fandom is well shot of her, if she has indeed flounced for good this time. Fingers crossed?

Here's hoping.

NOT cricket. Not cricket at all.
thisgirl_is From: thisgirl_is Date: March 14th, 2011 11:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
Nope. The bahleetion of the personal journal lasted just long enough to be sure she'd got everyone's attention. I try very hard to avoid being bitchy in fandom, but I am considering making an exception.

I also had a well-thought out and considered response, but then she comment locked everything, so all I really have to say is LOL BITTER!

No wait. What am I saying? I have hung out on ONTD_P. I have plenty to say, and I can say it with gifs! (Sorry, Wemyss. You didn't need your bandwidth, did you?)

Photobucket

OK, I think I'm done.

Curses! Well, I suppose it was too much to hope for, given the individual in question. Your gifs are brill, btw - very expressive ;)
