The Last Post.
Chief Petty Officer Charles Choules, 3 March 1901 - 5 May 2011.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

I was just reading his obituary; it sounds as if he was a remarkable man.

Indeed, yes.

As were they all.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

Yes.

Precisely.

Re: Yes.

When I was ten, I visited the military cemetery on Monte Grappa, where my people turned to bay and held on against overwhelming odds in the terrible winter of 1917-18. On every grave, the word "presente" - the individual soldier's answer to a roll-call - is carved, as if to say that the dead are still there to defend the pass even if the living no longer can.

Farewell to the last of them.

I wonder for how much longer we will have the Few among us.

Quite so.

Not long, I fear.
