An appeal.
I’m not filtering it because there’s no point; he must of necessity know (and he’s not best pleased with me).* In the past 16 months, my publishing partner and co-editor has endured the deaths of his parents in succession, been lumbered with by all accounts an encumbered and complicated estate situation, had a bit of a breakdown, and accordingly had to leave his firm. He’s land (he’s trying to flog) but – with the estate situation – no money. At all. (He supported his dying parents for years.) Now, I’ve a fair idea how many people do read this journal, and I know they pride themselves on liberality. Having (more or less) overcome MSP’s objections, this appeal: £5, £10, these are easy enough sums for most, so let us see how much we can raise to aid the gentleman in the next 24 hours, and if we get to £1000 to £1500, I’ll match it (in addition to what else I’m doing). He has a PayPal account to which contributions may be sent: markham[dot]pyle[at]gmail[dot]com
(ETA: removed comic [full stop] as Brammers suggested possibility of confusion).

Again, that's markham.pyle[AT]gmail.com

Small error in the address: no full stop.

I was once impoverished to the point of no food, at which point the rent boys who worked on a road I often walked down and who had previously been the recipients of ill-chosen lipsticks and baked goods took me out for pies until I had funds again. These things go around. When he is cashed up once more, there will be someone in need who will benefit from his kindness, as I am sure has happened in the past.

Precisely.

Thank you.

I'm ruefully amused.

Not sure MSP has the same view of Judy as we Friends of Dorothy do....

Re: I'm ruefully amused.

I'm pretty sure he's not a Liverpool fan, and other than that this is to me simply a very touching and inspiring song sung by one of the greatest voices of the century.

I wasn't including you in the 'we', of course.

And you're right on all counts.

Although perhaps...

...I should have posted the Johnny Cash version.
wemyss From: wemyss Date: November 4th, 2011 01:20 pm (UTC) (Link)

Best not.

He'd rabbit on about Johnny's in-laws. I admire Mother Maybelle; he is a fanatic, and a learned one at that.

Please pass on my love, dearest. He should have something in his inbox now from me.
wemyss From: wemyss Date: November 4th, 2011 12:32 pm (UTC) (Link)

I'll email the bugger.

You're a dear; I expect he'll agree, although no doubt writhing with embarrassment at all this.

It sucks that the exchange rate is going to effectively halve my donation. :/

It truly, truly is the though that counts.

And I make certain the poor old boy feels that.

Re: It truly, truly is the though that counts.

I've never sent anything but greenbacks through Paypal, so was pleased to find that they did the conversion for me, and that I could send a somewhat respectable amount without any pesky pence added on via said conversion.

You're a dear, dear person.

Truly.

Even though I don't like cricket?

Or rather, I don't get cricket.*

You're too kind.

*Nonetheless, would still happily listen to Dan Radcliffe natter on about the sport for hours on end.

What a shite year. The least I can do is to shout a pint (possibly worked out at London prices. Or Cumbria prices because, dear Lord, they can charge up there).

As I rush past -

- my thanks, and I make sure you'll have MSP's also.
