I've had a sudden revelation.
I know, now, why when Remus first appeared, his luggage was labelled as that of 'Professor RJ Lupin'.

He'd been living and working amongst Muggles, running a Punch and Judy show, with a magic act as back up.

Well, it's either that or he'd been playing the piano in a New Orleans knocking-shop.

I incline toward the latter explanation--when S.J. Perelman was a Hollywood screenwriter, he claimed to ask his mother to spare the family name by saying he was playing the piano in a callhouse.

Hmph.

Tough choice. Writing for Groucho, or learning piano from Fats Waller. THAT's a dilemma if ever I heard of one.

For a serious explanation of that, I like

For a serious explanation of that, I like <lj-user=a_t_rain>'s idea that it belonged to his father. But the idea of Remus punch-and-judying is priceless.

For a serious explanation, I concur.

Alternatively, Remus might have done a stint on staff at a poly.

Cambridge, say.

"Remus took with him a gift from his last graduating class, a briefcase with the legend Professor R.J. Lupin stamped on it, and carried it with an inordinate amount of pride"

This is from one of my favorite Remus back story fics, Sweet Home, by Sam. The briefcase itself is only briefly mentioned (Chapter 3), but the surrounding story is beautiful. No Punch and Judy unfortunately, but I hope you enjoy the rec nonetheless.

Yes, thanks.

All of copperbadge's work is so very good, isn't it. Thank you for reminding me of this one.
