From the Party Guilty of Committing 'Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn'

Name that comm.

As there seems to be sufficient interest in a community that supplements other Britpicking resources with offerings on the minutiae of life (from garden birds to jugged hare to the care and feeding of your tailor to pub etiquette to washing-up), what shall we name the damned thing?

Amongst proposals received to date are:

Fen Country

The Matters of Britain

Brit-nicking (Steal these facts!)

We’re Sorry, You Haven’t a Clue

Help (not the Beatles song)

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Yes, it is, rather.

But funny with it.

Oh, that IS clever.

I like that.

My name is Angus Prune...

Damn it all, now I have the Prune Tune stuck in my head.

I like the sound of 'We're sorry, You Haven't a Clue'. Might need a footnote, though.

Ditto here. And I think we could have much more fun without the footnote.

Yes and yes.

We'll see what the votes tell us.

I rather like 'The matters of Britain', but I'm a mediaevalist, so I would.

Except then it might lead to endless arguments about whether it ought to include the Celtic fringes of Northern France, too... or not so much?

Zoider's zoider. Zod the Vrogs an' their calvados.

'Theo Nott, disguised as a Breton onion seller, Apparated quietly into the space behind a dustbin in Porthcawl....'

Re: Zoider's zoider. Zod the Vrogs an' their calvados.

Somebody ought to write that.

We're Sorry, You Haven't a Clue - definitely! Or, as suggested above, I'm Sorry, I'll Write That Again, as a less pointed remark for those who aren't familiar with British radio comedy. Have to have links to all the best of Radio 4 though - those two, plus Just a Minute, The Archers, Woman's Hour (and more modern additions such as The Now Show and Charles Wemmbley-Hogg Goes Orf!?).

'Less pointed' may be best.

'Tonight, on WWN Seven, the premiere of "Justin Finch-Fletchley Goes Off"'....

I may use series titles as tags for categories of essays. Placet?

Ha! Yes!

Mihi placet :-)

You might also need to add in some plays on the names of Radio 2 DJs, though ::shudders:: to avoid being accused of only representing middle-class British culture.

What a brilliant idea.

I'll talk to them about that. Thank you, my own personal Hermione, I'd be lost without you.

I quite like 'matters' and 'we're sorry'... though I also quite like the 'I'm sorry' corollary. Not, of course, that I get the joke. ^^;

You will, now.

We are up and running.
