A few words regarding heraldry.
I see, again and again, the misuse of the term, crest.

This is a shield, not a crest. Damn it.
THIS is a crest.
This is a helm. It supports the crest.
This is the mantling for the helm.
This is the compartment. You'll see why.
This is the motto, or slughorn.
This is a supporter (NOT a West Ham supporter, I note).
This is the other supporter.
This is a complete achievement.

Clear, are we, now?

Does the mantling have any particular significance? I've come across all the others before, but that's new to me.

(Good to see you back, by the way)

Not really.

It's just good heraldry, really. I tend, as you know, to use Scots mantling, rather than that wild arrangement that looks like tattered seaweed, but that's immaterial, and no blazon dictates one's preferences. It represents, obviously, the knight's kerchief over the helm that keeps one's brains from broiling in a hot metal casque. Think of it as a mediaeval sweat-band.

Good to BE back.

Erm. That was me. Not in a position of competence.

Wot? (Is puzzled.)

I've not seen you commit the misuse. I've seen a lot of appalling fic that does, mind, but you are in a wholly different and superior class, my lad.

Re: Wot? (Is puzzled.)

Oh, I mentioned it in a post on Britpickery, The one about passports. I think I described the royal coat of arms as a crest.

Did you? Most injudicious of you.

Don't let me hear of it again, or I shall have no choice but to take points and report you to your housemaster.

I couldn't resist.
