He's a rebel and a runner / He's a signal turning green - Wemyss's Appalling Hobby:
From the Party Guilty of Committing 'Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn'

He's a rebel and a runner / He's a signal turning green

Just a brief note whilst I emerge momentarily from the maelstrom.  I know I’ve outstanding – in all senses – comments to reply to; I shall do after, oh, the Seventh Book madness dies down.  At that time I shall also doubtless have an update on the Baker’s Daughter, my Mad Godmother, the Takeaway Wars, local cricket, and the rest of the peter-simple world that I sometimes write of here.

A few random observations:

It’s astounding, isn’t it, that in the next general election, the party leaders will be a Stalinist dominie, the addled and superannuated games master of a minor public school, and the Louis Napoleon of Notting Hill.  God help the poor bloody country.

I was fascinated in the past week by painless_j’s essay on titles for fanfic and by the meme I saw through tree_and_leaf’s journal (I believe) that asked for the lyrics that came up on a random shuffle of one’s digital music.  I was fascinated because these reminded me just how different my mind is to those of others (not that that’s a shock: much as I distrust any test devised by Tabs, I do score a good 40 on Professor Baron-Cohen’s Asperger’s Quotient test, after all).  What I note is that most of my digital music is instrumental; that much of what isn’t, is either church music or opera; that what songs-with-lyrics are not hymnody or opera are largely either swing / trad jazz or traditional ballads from the Celtic fringe; and that, unless one wishes to count the Tannahill Weavers and suchlike as ‘pop’, my pop/rock playlist tends to run to Supertramp, Rush, Squeeze, and the like.  I am perhaps more a product of my generation than I had thought.  And I note also that my choices for fic titles, chapter titles, and epigraphs are equally idiosyncratic, and perhaps relatedly so.  Remarkable how one is affected by one’s life experiences, isn’t it.

It’s imperative that everyone read, mark, and inwardly digest sollersuk’s recent post on names.

Primarily through shocolate’s agency, I have seen the Details picture of young Mr Radcliffe, in which he is wearing only a leather waistcoat over his torso and is sporting a good deal of scruff.  If he were less, ah, bodily hirsute and more nearly blondish, he’d be, in that rig, an uncomfortable ringer for a youth with whom I slept for half a year in the early 1990s (an Old Gregorian, if I recall: when RC lads go off the rails … well!).

Now: back to writing.

*checks playlist* OMG I am a child of my time. The Kinks, Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez... then Meat Loaf and David Bowie and on to Beautiful South and I must sweettalk daughter for Tracy Chapman.

And on the other hand there is Mrs Akroyd, Flanders and Swann and Tom Lehrer.

And classical: it's only a Nano so I had to take the Wagner off, but lots of Beethoven and Sibelius amongst others.

And then, just to really screw up the shuffle: Hugo's Dutch in Three Months

Lots more, but it gives a quick impression.

Deathly Hallows: The End Is Nigh!!!

Huh. You Brits are really into this historical writing thing, ain't ya? However, dear Wemyssie, this means I must adore you the less, since you let it out that there are more of your sort out there...

I'm sitting in the non-IMAX theater on my own after midnight and my head started singing the lyrics to "Hedwig's Theme":

"Everyone knows that Ha-reee
Is gay as a Christmas tree...
Everyone knows but Ha-reee
{Da-dee dee-dee-dee dee-dee}"

Inspired casting. Those kids are so their characters!

In this instance, I can be even more old-fogeyish than you. I do not even own an I-Pod or any electronic music (well, except a download of “Hvis Frederik var til fyre”, a mind-boggling pop-song featuring the Crown Prince of Denmark and mpreg). I’ve just never really got on with portable music players.

Another one who scores massively male-brained on that spectrum test. Well, when the questions include several along the lines of “Do you notice different types of trees”, anyone who went on childhood walks with my mother (“[Daughters], is this plant a fern or bracken? How can you tell?”) is going to score off the scale.
