Shome mishtake, shurely? - Wemyss's Appalling Hobby:
From the Party Guilty of Committing 'Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn'
Shome mishtake, shurely?

I may as well admit, I distrust thoroughly and adamantly communists, fellow travellers (sputniki, if you will), and Useful Fools.

Like Babette Gross, I shouldn’t be in the least surprised to find that the German CP were involved in setting the Reichstag fire.

I don’t find it at all easy to accept Egon Erwin Kisch’s having first reported the Redl scandal – with all its implications – being purely coincidental.

And to find, now, that the ‘fascist pig’ of a West German bobby – Karl-Heinz Kurras – who shot  protestor Benno Ohnesorg on 2 June 1967 at a West Berlin demo, was in fact a Stasi agent, is not in the least shocking.

It’s precisely the sort of thing Mielke and Wolf revelled in.  And I’m perfectly certain that the Germans will continue to resist further enquiry into the ‘accident’ and whether the shot was fired upon MfS / HVA orders.

Surely merely another coincidence, after all.

24 February 1967: Warsaw Pact members are forbidden by the USSR to have diplomatic ties with the Bundesrepublik.

9 March 1967: Stalin’s daughter escapes to the West.

19 May 1967: Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov succeeds to headship of the KGB.

And let’s not forget the lead-up to the Six Day War.

After all, the Eastern Bloc services had no interest at all in destabilising the West generally or the Federal Republic in particular, least of all just then.  A Stasi secret agent in the West Berlin police shooting’s an unarmed demonstrator who’s protesting the Shah of Iran’s attendance at the Opera (it was The Magic Flute, by the way) seems perfectly coincidental in context.  Or at the least, he acted alone.  Naturally.  Even prize marksmen can miss, can they not.  The purest accident.  Which is why they’re burking the files, no doubt.

Pull the other one: it has bells on.

I take it you read Stephen Koch's DOUBLE LIVES? And where does the rest come from?

Before almost anyone else, I think.

Along with Radosh, McMeekin, the Venona transcripts, BWT on Stilwell in China (Borodin & Blyukher!) ... oh, the list goes on, and has for a good five and twenty years at least of my attention.

The rest is I think pure open source material generally available.
