I found myself nodding to this comment at a left-of-center blog that I found linked on twitter...

(comment by SJS in case it doesn't put you directly in the right spot - I hate blogspot)

Worth reading the host blogger's entry as well.

It's actually the looters that anger me more than the rioters. Rage I can understand - I can wrap my head around it and, lame justification that is, I can link one act to another and - pardon the Americanism - get it.

The looters, those who are posting the pics of their free goodies while wearing a proud smile, disgust me and I hope that one day all of their possessions are stolen from them just so they can see how it feels. Though it's not likely they would care nearly as much as I would wish them to, for they would simply go out and steal again to replace what was taken.

May you and all you hold dear stay safe.

It's hard to know what's happening from this side of the pond. I do hope that your more kindly & orderly society will be spared the violence that has so often plagued us, here in the States. I recall too well the riots after Martin Luther King was murdered. My father & our minister were among the first into Chicago's southside -- we didn't live far away -- with a stationwagon filled with milk, bread, etc. Your riots, we pray, will not get to that point. Then violence has been more a part of our culture, at least around mid-century. I recall tear gas, firehoses and police dogs attacking protesters, including women, in Birmingham, AL, a few years earlier, along with a long stream of Ku Klux Klan violence. And then afterwards the violence of the Black Panthers and the radical left.

Again, with no sense of what's happening to you, I've noticed here that violence, both within families and within societies, tends to breed more violence, wherever it purportedly "starts". Sadly & too often, the rabble on the other side -- and at least in the States, no side here seems to lack for ready rabble -- will too often pick it up. May your proud nation be spared that. I lack deep knowledge of your traditions, but they seem much less violent than ours; may they be good, may they be honored, and may they keep you & your dear people safe from harm and the threat of harm.

As your other commentor noted, looting is just lowlife opportunism.

Jane continues well & improving, and sends her regards.

Completely OT

I thought you'd gone! I haven't heard from you for years. I'm so glad to see your icon. Please post more often.

Re: Completely OT

Sadly I have little lj time, or free time in general. I fear I've dusted off a new specialty, once more in demand -- working with combat trauma. I'm also doing more presentations, trainings and articles in my field. That and getting a bit older -- in a few wks, I'm 61 -- leads to some slowing down. But with news of the riots, I wanted to at least check in with dear friends, like you, who might be affected. Jane continues her recovery, and we are both in fairly good health.

Again, may you stay safe.

So glad to hear you and Jane are well.

Sorry to hear the reasons WHY you are so busy.

More later - must dash.
