I may perhaps be permitted to hope that the large influx from what we here are pleased to call the Protestant Episcopal Church will relieve those of my confession from the brutal ugliness which has become an inescapable, as it is an unnecessary, characteristic of the vernacular liturgy. My preference is for the Novus Ordo secundum editionem typicam, but that is scarcely to be found ; say "Latin Mass" & one is assumed to be speaking of the Tridentine, which has its full share of unsatisfactory points, as the Council Fathers observed. That I could attend any Sunday in the calendar, & do betimes, to remind myself why I continue to tolerate the dismal services at the parish church to which, mirabile dictu in this automobile-demented country, I can walk of a morning.

(as I did this morning, in fact)

Mind, far from triumphing over the state of the English Church & her daughter sees, I rather look forward to a new Settlement of Religion & putting the whole mess behind us. At how many more Papal funerals will the red hats of Canterbury & York be missed in their proper & ancient places, only to be found among the secular dignitaries? But these things take time — we almost healed the wound gaping between East & West at Florence, which is near six hundred years now that the work is not yet accomplished, though the Patriarch of Kiev prays for it morning & night. Parliament lifted from Edward VII the Oath it laid upon William & Mary, so I live in hope.

Alas, it is now less likely than ever.

Courtesy, naturally, of the superannuated hippies now in control of the Anglican Communion in its paler areas.
