Well worth your time

Yes, the didactic side of me shall no doubt cross-post this to Britpickery as a resource for fen, but that’s not the point. This is something everyone wants to explore and to enjoy. The Beeb have put together a London Collection – some of these being from the 1950s – of old programmes. I don’t know if overseas viewers can view these – the availability, with luck, may be a bit different to the regional block for current iPlayer programmes – but if you can, either by being in Britain or through having a VPN or some damned thing (hullo, my name is Gervase, and I am a happy Luddite), you really must watch these. There is Betjeman travelling from Marble Arch to Edgware, with four specially commissioned poems along the way and the ghost of Handel. There is Kenneth Williams talking of Bloomsbury and a village cricket match. There is the rebuilding of the House of Commons after the War, and Battersea in the Fifties, and the building of the Victoria Line, and Margaret Drabble, and cabbies taking The Knowledge, and all sorts.

This is indispensable matter, gladdening the heart even if one doesn’t, as I do not, particularly like London.
