Stood the hair up on the back of my neck. It is pretty hard to remember to breathe watching that.

Ah, that was lovely. Forgive me for my ignoramus questions -- to wit, St. Andrew? Do Scottish churches have saints, or is it mostly tradition? Are those pipers military, or just military-traditional? (I'm guessing former, for various reasons, but I'm unfamiliar with Scottish uniform customs.)

And please, what's the name of the song they're playing? I really like it -- also the clear dedication of the men. (seriousness? I can't find a word for what is clearly such a meaningful ceremony to them.)

I'm going to guess it's Caledonia.

It's called 'Highland Cathedral'. The melody was written by a couple of Germans(!!) back in the 1980s, for a Highland Games being held there.

A number of people have put lyrics to it, and it's been suggested as a National Anthem for Scotland. I've had to sing it on various occasions and my favourite lyrics are by Moira Kerr:

Land of the thistle and the rowan tree,
Scotland a nation, proud and free.
Under the Saltire, flying high for me,
Leading us onward to victory.

Aiming high for all to see,
Together we stand, with faith in our land.
In times of trial and in victory,
Scotland we will be there.

High in the mountains the die was cast,
By our forefathers in the past.
Vows of unity and peace were made,
In a Highland cathedral, where the pipers played.

Aiming high for all to see,
Together we stand, with faith in our land.
In times of trial and in victory,
Scotland we will be there.

Land of the thistle and the rowan tree,
Scotland a nation, proud and free.
Under the Saltire, flying high for me,
Leading us onward to victory.

Thanks for the information, all

I spent the evening enjoying my new faster (than 56600 baud, anyway, which was what I had till last month) googling "Caledonia" and listening to Scottish music, including this piece, which I found -- well duh -- Wemyss had actually included the title, but I assumed that was the location.

Reward to anyone who can untangle the previous sentence. It's almost 2 am here, and my brain's going. Sorry! Those are indeed nice lyrics. I enjoyed learning about Scotland the Brave on a side path, too. Can people download stuff from YouTube and keep it on their own computer?

Re: Thanks for the information, all

I've done that before, but I'll have to find the website I did it through...
